Progress: Week 3

We had a terrific third week of bicycle refurbishing at FB4K Maryland.

375 bikes (and trikes, scooters, striders, a unicycle, etc) have been donated to date (+77 this week!), and they’re still coming in! We really appreciate the great response to our call for bikes: We blew right through 350 and 375; let’s shoot for 400! We’ll be accepting donations from 3-6 PM Monday through Friday and 12-6 on Saturday through next week, so spread the word.

And, the bikes are for the most part in great shape! This week, we’ve cleaned, adjusted, and repaired 73 of them, bringing the total to 182. We got a shipment of parts in from our partner Quality Bike Products, and reduced the number of bikes waiting for parts from 30 to 11 even as we processed dozens of bikes and added some to the queue.

We started with the littlest bikes and will work our way up, so we won’t continue refurbishing bikes at this breakneck pace, but it’s a great start.

Over 80 volunteers have worked for over 350 hours to date collecting, sorting, cleaning, and refurbishing bikes.

Next week we plan to finish all of the single speed coaster brake bikes that were donated this week, and we’ll continue to work on the BMX bikes and the 20-inch multi-speed bikes.

We can use your help, regardless of your bicycle know-how. If you’d like to volunteer, sign up on our volunteer page for a shift at your convenience: It’s a great way to learn about bikes!
